CHENNAI: A day after three people were fatally run over by a drunk driver on the Velachery-Taramani Road in the wee hours of Monday, police have traced the mother of Arumugham, who was killed along with his wife Aishwarya. The woman offered to take care of the couple's child, but police are yet to decide on the custody of the 18-month-old boy.

Arumugham and Aishwarya, rag pickers sleeping on the pavement along with an elderly woman, were run over by a Tata Indica car. Their 18-month-old son Anbu escaped unhurt.

Arumugham's septuagenarian mother Jaya is under the care of his sister Bharathi, a flower vendor at Ice House. She happened to see the news of the accident but did not think the victims were her kin. Only after seeing the child on television, Jaya knew the identity of the victims. The family membershave not been on good terms with Arumugham since he eloped with Aishwarya two years ago.

The couple, who did not have a house, led a nomadic life. But Jaya kept visiting her son, tracing him with the help of other rag pickers. The Guindy traffic investigation police have been trying to trace the relatives with the help of photographs they obtained from the spot.

Police conducted inquiries with a paper mart where Arumugham used to sell old newspapers, but they did not get any information about any relative. "We showed the photographs to a few people in Ice House where we got some information about their relatives," said Guindy traffic investigation inspector Rajapandian.

Jaya wanted to take care of the orphaned child, but police said they were not sure as the woman had no means to bring up a child. The child who was kept at the Indian Council for Children Welfare (ICCW), Shenoy Nagar, was produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and sent to Bala Mandir in Teynampet. Meanwhile, Sivakumar, Sasikumar and Devendiran who were booked on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder have been remanded in judicial custody.
